NL Pharmacy Museum Recruiting Inaugural Board of Directors

October 6th, 2021

The recently incorporated Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Museum Inc. is currently recruiting for its inaugural Board of Directors. Volunteers interested in the preservation of the history of healthcare, building a sense of community, and enhancing tourism opportunities in the province are encouraged to apply.

For more details, please refer to the Pharmacy Museum – Board Recruitment Package.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Museum was developed by the Apothecary Hall Trust and opened in September 1988. The museum’s mission is to honour our healthcare by sharing the history and evolution of trusted pharmacy practice as it was experienced here in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The museum is located on Water Street in Apothecary Hall. The heritage building, which housed the Peter O’Mara Drug Store from 1922 to 1986, has as much history in its walls as some of the many pharmaceutical artifacts inside. These artifacts include both in-house and commercial pharmaceuticals from the past century, mortars and pestles, scales and tablet presses, perfumes and cosmetics, and show globes from the early 1900s. All of the pieces collectively tell a tale of how pharmacy professionals came to be the trusted community members they are today.

The Board of Directors will work in a collaborative environment to provide the Museum Manager with oversite and direction for the daily operations of the Newfoundland & Labrador Pharmacy Museum. The museum is seeking a diverse group of professionals to fill the Board positions, comprised of arts/museum/tourism professionals, retired or active pharmacy professionals, and other professionals with experience in, but not limited to, fundraising, financial management, human resources, administration, event planning, technical expertise, and risk management. Board members will serve a 2- or 3-year term and be expected to meet once every 6-8 weeks for the first year of establishment.

Interested persons can submit an expression of interest in the form of a cover letter or résumé to Deanna Walter, Museum Manager, at info@nlpharmacymuseum.com.
